Meet Jim: the best gym in Barcelona’s Poblenou, built on Joy In Movement
Welcome to Jim, the gym at The Social Hub Barcelona Poblenou. Two outdoor pools, 24/7 training, DJ booth on the floor and group classes, all built on one idea: Joy In Movement. Here is why the best gym in Barcelona might be the one nobody is telling you about.
There is a moment, somewhere around the third set, when you realise the person on the rack next to you is grinning at the same track you are. You catch eyes. You laugh. One of you spots the other. Twenty minutes later you are both in the sauna, sweating out the week and arguing about where to actually eat in Poblenou. That is not a gym story. That is a Jim story.
Welcome to Jim, the gym at The Social Hub Barcelona, in the heart of Poblenou, and quietly one of the most underrated places to move your body in the city. We will explain the name in a second, because it gives away the whole philosophy. First, the people.
The part nobody talks about: who you actually meet
People do not come to Jim just to train. They come because of who is training next to them.
Poblenou is full of people doing interesting things, and a lot of them are here before the workday properly starts. A freelancer who moved to Barcelona to build a bigger life. A remote developer splitting the year between here and home. The founders scaling a brand across Europe who somehow still make the 8am class. Students finding their feet, locals living the city to the full, guests who dropped in for a week and never quite wanted to leave.
Different job titles. Same energy. And the best connections, the collaboration, the flat-share, the idea you could not have had on your own, almost never happen between people who do the same thing for a living. They happen between people who recognise something in each other across a kettlebell.
The coaches see it happen constantly. Lena Gomes(opens in new tab), performance coach and founder of HYBRD Academy, who runs Urban Run Club and the HYROX Squad, puts it plainly: workout partners become travel buddies, business partners and close friends. She tells the story of two members who turned up to their first Hyrox session on the same evening, neither of them knowing a soul. The team paired them up for a partner exercise. “They immediately clicked, kept coming back every week, and before long signed up for their first HYROX race together,” she says. “They trained side by side, crossed the finish line as a team, and today they’re close friends.” The race, as she puts it, is just the excuse. The community is what people stay for.
They trained side by side, crossed the finish line as a team, and today they’re close friends.
It is not only the high-intensity crowd. Christine Peine(opens in new tab), who leads the Wednesday breathwork ritual, watches the same thing unfold in a room full of people lying still with their eyes shut. “I can create the conditions, but it’s the people in the room who truly create it together,” she says. By the end of a session, a group of strangers starts to feel like a community. “It’s amazing to see how a genuine sense of connection can form in just 60 minutes.”
We cannot promise you will meet the person who sparks your next big idea at Jim. But the place is built so the odds are very much in your favour. The group classes that turn strangers into spotting partners. The recovery room where conversations run longer than planned. The welcome coffee that is there precisely so you stop, look up and say hi. A small hello can make a big difference. We have seen it happen more times than we can count.
So, what does “Jim” actually stand for?
Here is the reveal. Jim is not just a friendlier way of saying the gym. JIM stands for Joy In Movement, and that is the whole idea in three words.
Most gyms are temples to the solo grind. Headphones in, eyes down, get it done, get out. Functional, efficient, a little lonely, and increasingly a little intimidating: all mirrors and macros and the unspoken sense that you should already be in better shape before you are allowed in. Barcelona has plenty of those.
Jim is built on the opposite idea. You train here not to shrink yourself, but to grow, take up space and feel good in the here and now. Social health comes first. Movement should be joyful, not judgmental. It is wellness that genuinely welcomes every body, whatever shape your week, your schedule or your squat is in.
Giving the gym a name, a face and a personality is a small joke that tells you something true. This is a fitness floor that behaves like a person, not a facility. It is the one that says hi when you walk in. You are not a membership number here. You are someone Jim is glad to see.
A gym that does not behave like a gym
It also happens to be a genuinely beautiful space. Picture warm wood, an actual indoor running track curving through the floor, and a wall of medicine balls stacked like trophies. It looks less like a fitness suite and more like somewhere you would want to spend a Saturday.
Under the good looks is serious kit. The floor runs on a full Technogym setup, but there is more to it than the logo. You get a complete cardio line of treadmills, bikes, rowers and the stair climber everyone pretends they did not see; plug-and-train selection strength machines; a free-weights area with dumbbells, barbells, racks and benches; and a dedicated functional zone for cable work, kettlebells, sleds and track. Yoga and reformer Pilates have their own studio, so a class never swallows the main floor.
Two pools, and a rooftop worth the climb
Here is the part most of Barcelona has not clocked: Jim has two pools.
On the terrace there is a proper outdoor pool, big enough to actually swim laps rather than wade about. It is the one you use to train, to clear your head before work, or to undo a heavy leg day. Then, up top, there is the rooftop pool: smaller, cooler, more about the dip and the view than the distance. The rooftop also has a bar and a restaurant, which is how a quick post-swim plunge has a habit of turning into staying for lunch. An outdoor pool in Barcelona is a luxury most gyms simply cannot offer. Jim has two, at two different speeds.
The timetable that started a group chat
This is where Jim quietly becomes unbeatable. Most gym timetables read like a spreadsheet. Jim’s reads like a night out.
The programme of group classes in Barcelona runs Monday to Saturday, morning and evening, with a backbone you could set your week by. Mondays open with Reformer Pilates and close with Bootcamp. Tuesday is Core & Yoga first thing, then Urban Run Club in the evening. Wednesday brings Rhythm & Sweat and Peach Pump. Thursday pairs Pilates with the HYROX Squad. Saturday morning stacks SHEVOLUTION, a HIIT workout and Lil Jim for the kids, back to back. Most sessions run an hour, Peach Pump is a sharp 45 minutes, and classes are capped so the coach can actually see you. Nearly everything comes at more than one intensity, so the same slot works whether it is your first week or your third year.
Then there is the layer on top: the rituals, the ones you plan your month around. Breathwork on a Wednesday evening. Heat Beat, the sauna ritual, and a proper massage slot on Fridays. Tango Sessions that take over Sunday afternoon. Twice a month there is Test Your Fit Level, an all-day drop-in to see where you actually stand. Friday and Sunday are otherwise left clear on purpose, so the specials get room to breathe. Some are childfriendly, some invite you to bring a plus-one, and the point of every one of them is the same: a reason to be in the room together.
Because that is the real point, not novelty for its own sake. Movement is more fun with other people, and a room full of strangers in Rhythm & Sweat quietly gives everyone permission to stop performing and start enjoying themselves. Which, conveniently, is also when people actually talk to each other.
Train, sweat, reset, repeat
The real magic is the rhythm. Train in the morning on the track or the floor. Swim. Take a class that makes you laugh. Then comes the reset: a sauna scented with lavender and peppermint, ice baths for the brave, and a recovery room built to do exactly what the name promises, slow you down and bring you back. Mind, body, mates, as the team puts it. A complete wind-down, not an afterthought.
It is a deliberate balance, and it is the philosophy in action. As Lena Gomes puts it, the joy in movement comes from experiencing both: giving everything when it is time to push, and allowing yourself to slow down when it is time to recover.
And because Jim is open 24/7, the rhythm is yours to set. Membership comes with round-the-clock access, so the gym bends around your day rather than the other way round: a 6am swim before a flight, a midnight session after a long shift, a Sunday that starts whenever you do.
Because The Social Hub is built around the idea that the best afternoons drift into evenings, you also have somewhere to land. Grab something from the bar or restaurant, head up to the rooftop, or just stay in the building where the conversation you started in the sauna keeps going. You never really have to leave. Which is the whole idea.
Rooted in Poblenou
Every Social Hub is shaped by the neighbourhood around it, and Barcelona is no exception. Jim is not a gym airlifted in from nowhere. It is part of Poblenou: the local classes, the local faces on the screens, the creative energy that has made this corner of the city one of its most interesting.
So the people you meet here are not a random sample. They are the curious, the open, the ones building things, drawn to a place that is genuinely plugged into its neighbourhood. You are not just joining a gym in Barcelona’s Poblenou. You are tapping into a slice of the city you would struggle to find on your own.
And if you are visiting rather than living here, the same building has rooms. You can train like a local, recover like you are on holiday, and meet people who give you a reason to come back. Most hotels offer a sad little fitness room with two treadmills and a broken cable machine. The Social Hub offers a full social wellness scene that happens to come with a bed upstairs. Pull up a chair
Barcelona does not need another gym. It has plenty. What it was missing was a place where movement, recovery and real human connection happen under one roof. Where a Tuesday morning class can change the shape of your whole week, and a Thursday in the sauna can end with a new friend and a half-formed plan to build something together. Where the goal is not to shrink yourself, but to grow, take up space and find your people while you are at it.
That is Jim. Joy In Movement. And now you are in on it.
The door is open. Pull up a chair, and come find out who is on the rack next to you.
